Our Resource People
Mike McKay
As Director of the Canadian Self-Regulation Initiative, Mike McKay works with schools, districts and communities to support increased understanding and application of self-regulation and social-emotional health and the connection between neurophysiology and education. Mike began working with Dr. Stuart Shanker several years ago, facilitating and co-presenting at conferences, and advising school systems on how to build capacity and success by applying the neuroscience of self-regulation at the individual student and classroom levels. Mike’s commitment to Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day translates into exploring how we can activate what we now know about human development and social-emotional learning and ensure it supports capacity-building throughout our system.
At the end of 2013, with 35 years’ experience in education, Mike retired as Superintendent/CEO of the Surrey School District, a diverse and dynamic school system. In addition to having taught at both elementary and secondary levels, Mike has served as a school and district administrator. He also worked with the B.C. Ministry of Education as Director of Educational Innovation responsible for provincial intermediate and graduation programs. His leadership experiences have led him to encourage schools to engage in value-added improvement processes, through which school communities commit to enhancing capacity in a positive, appreciative inquiry environment.
Mike has served on the Boards of several organizations committed to championing Canada’s public education system and promoting B.C. internationally. In addition to his focus on self-regulation, he is also active as a resource person on system improvement through innovative leadership, accountability, ethics and professional learning communities.
CSRI Associate/Resource Team: CSRI engages with and collaborates with educators and allied professionals from across B.C. and beyond. These professionals are classroom teachers, school and district administrators, associated professionals from child mental health fields and others. They are known for playing a leadership role in bringing self-regulation thinking and practice into their classroom, school, district and community. CSRI Associates have provided workshop and conference sessions in schools, districts and regions for the past several years. They are committed to being difference makers in enhancing system capacity.
